Interventional Pain Management
Interventional Pain Management, a specialized area of medicine focusing on the precise diagnosis and targeted treatment of acute and chronic pain. At High Desert Sports and Spine, we understand the complexity of pain and its profound impact on your quality of life. Our goal is to provide effective pain relief through innovative, non-pharmacological methods, tailored to each patient's unique needs.
Understanding Interventional Pain Management
Interventional pain management utilizes various procedures to directly address the source of pain. Unlike traditional pain management strategies that often rely on medications, interventional techniques aim to interrupt the pain signals sent to the brain, thereby alleviating pain at its origin. This field combines the expertise of various medical specialties, including anesthesiology and physical medicine and rehabilitation, to provide individualized and comprehensive care.
Our Non-Medication Treatment Options
Our practice is committed to exploring and utilizing non-medication options for managing pain. Below are some of the key interventional treatments we offer:
Epidural Injections and Nerve Blocks: These involve the injection of anesthetics, with or without steroids, near specific nerves to temporarily interrupt pain signals.
Radiofrequency Ablation: This technique uses radio waves to produce heat aimed at specific nerves, effectively reducing pain by disrupting pain signal pathways. This technique is classically used for facet joints, but our interventionalists utilize the same technology to target newly discovered sources of pain such as the basivertebral nerve with the Intracept Procedure.
Spinal Cord and Peripheral Nerve Stimulation (SCS and PNS): Involves the implantation of a device that sends electrical pulses to the spinal cord or targeted nerve thereby interfering with the transmission of pain signals to the brain.
Kyphoplasty: This minimally invasive surgery quickly and effectively treats compression fractures of the spine due to osteoporosis or cancer. A fractured spine is a particularly painful condition that leads to other complications such as pneumonia, blood clots, or death; treating these fractures has proven to provide improvement in quality of life and prevent complications that can shorten one’s life.
Minimally Invasive Lumbar Decompression (MILD) and Vertiflex Indirect Lumbar Decompression: Our interventionalists are trained in these outpatient surgeries targeting lumbar spinal stenosis, or narrowing in the lumbar spine. These procedures can quickly treat this debilitating condition, and thereby avoid a more invasive spine surgery and offer a much quicker recovery time.
Sacroiliac Joint Fusion: Stabilization of the sacroiliac joint can permanently treat sacroiliac joint pain caused by instability of this large weight-bearing joint. Our interventionalists are trained in both lateral and posterior approaches offering a minimally invasive treatment for this chronic problem.
Benefits of Interventional Pain Management
Targeted Relief: By addressing the source of pain directly, interventional treatments can provide more precise relief than pain medications and avoid unnecessary side effects.
Reduced Dependence on Medications: These treatments can minimize the need for oral pain medications, reducing the risk of side effects and dependence.
Improved Quality of Life: Effective pain management enables patients to return to daily activities, improving their overall well-being.
Customized Care Plans: Each patient’s pain is unique; therefore, treatment plans are tailored to the individual’s specific conditions and needs.
Our Commitment to Patient Care
We believe in a patient-centered approach, where treatments are chosen based on medical necessity, clinical evidence, and individual patient preferences. Our team of specialists provide compassionate care, employing the latest advancements in interventional pain management to ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients.
